2018 is looking to be another great year for Emily Blunt as the Golden Globe winning actress is set to star in two wildly different, but much buzzed about films (and will also lending her voice in “Sherlock Gnomes,” but who’s counting that). The first is Disney’s “Mary Poppins” sequel “Mary Poppins Returns.” The other is “A Quiet Place,” a horror movie that is probably the complete opposite from the family-friendly fare of Disney. A family living on a farm hides from a supernatural evil attracted to sound by avoiding making sound and communicating in sign language.
The film is directed by Blunt’s husband “The Office” star John Krasinski in his third directorial effort after 2009’s “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” and the 2016 film “The Hollars.” He also rewrote the script for the film from a spec script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. This is Krasinski’s first foray into big studio fare and Paramount has been very secretive about this film. The studio has kept the story very hush-hush just releasing a brief tagline of “If they can’t hear you, they can’t hunt you” along with the first teaser back in November 2017.
In a cover story for Vogue, Blunt mentioned that she saw the film’s minimal dialogue as a metaphor for parenthood. “Much of the sort of real-life roller coaster that is parenthood is unspoken. The first time you bring your kid home from the hospital, there’s no talking. You just pray they’re going to be O.K. When you drop your kid off at school for the first time, there’s no talking. You just pray they’re going to be O.K. So there’s a familiar poignance and power to watching a family live in silence . . . that actually speaks volumes.”
Krasinski also stars in the film with his wife along with “Wonderstruck” breakout Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Paramount will open the film across America on April 6, 2018.
