‘Eddington’: Ari Aster’s New Film With Joaquin Phoenix & Emma Stone Reportedly Eyes Cannes Debut & Summer Release

Ari Aster’s (“Midsommar”) next feature “Eddington” boasts one of the more impressive casts assembled for one of his projects with the likes of Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) leading alongside Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”), Austin Butler (“The Bikeriders”), Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. (“Triple 9”). “Eddington” is not only heading to the European Film Market, a prime project for any distributor to scoop up, but according to a report from Variety, A24 Films is considering having the pic debut and “could” compete at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

This year, the festival is taking place from May 13 until May 24, giving A24 and Aster plenty of time to prepare the film and prep for an early awards run via a Cannes debut screening and various press interviews before its main theatrical release. It would make Aster’s first debut at Cannes as the studio is strongly considering putting out “Eddington” sometime in the summer.

While the studio has kept mostly mum on the plot details of “Eddington,” the report says the Aster film is believed to “revolve around a couple stranded in a small New Mexico town. Though they are initially welcomed, the town takes a sinister turn by nightfall. Phoenix portrays the town’s sheriff with ambitious dreams.”

Lars Knudsen co-wrote the “Eddington” script with Aster. Two other A24 titles heading to the EFM include David Lowery’s (“The Green Knight”) epic pop melodrama “Mother Mary and the recent Sundance breakout comedy-drama “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You led by Aussie actress Rose Byrne.

Phoenix, of course, is reuniting with Aster after leading his nightmare-like horror comedy “Beau Is Afraid,” released in 2023. It is an underrated and underappreciated entry from the talented genre filmmaker that is wholeheartedly worth checking out if you get the chance.
