Got a Tip?

Updated: ‘Arrival,’ ‘Manchester’ And ‘Silence’ Ineligible As 145 Original Scores Make The Oscars Cut

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 145 qualifying scores for the  2017 Best Original Score Oscar and there were three somewhat surprising omissions.

There was always some concern Johann Johannsson‘s work on “Arrival” would be disqualified by the inclusion of Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” but many believed Johannsson still made the time qualification needed. That doesn’t appear to be the case.

The other missing music scores were Kathryn Kluge and Kim Allen Kluge’s score for “Silence” and Lesley Barber‘s score for “Manchester by the Sea.”  According to Kris Tapley at Variety, both were deemed as not being substantial enough to the film. It’s worth noting ‘Manchester’ features a number of classical compositions and that likely hurt it with the branch’s qualification committee.

The Best Original Score nominees will be reveled with the rest of the 89th Academy Award nominations on Jan. 24.
