Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has already made a name for himself in the music business as a Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and composer. But the multi-hyphenate dabbles in film production, too, like his 2017 feature debut “Kuso,” which had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. There’s also his installment in the “V/H/S/99” horror anthology from last year, which he wrote, directed, and scored himself.
And now Flying Lotus takes on sci-fi for his sophomore feature, which stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul. “Ash” follows González, the sole survivor on a distant planet who awakes to discover the rest of her space station crew murdered. Should she trust Paul, the man sent to rescue her? Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliot also star in the upcoming film.
XYZ Films co-produces “Ash” with GFC Films, with sci-fi auteur Neill Blomkamp and Echo Lake also on board as executive producers. “Ash” is XYZ’s latest film in a year stocked with intriguing projects from the banner, including Matt Johnson‘s “Blackberry,” “In Flames,” and Atom Egoyan‘s latest, “Seven Veils,” among others. As for GFC Films, new titles include Christine Jeff‘s “A Mistake” with Elizabeth Banks and an adaptation of Mark Manson‘s “The Stuble Art Of Not Giving A F*ck.”
