2011’s “Attack The Block” is a lot of things: Joe Cornish‘s directorial debut, John Boyega‘s breakout film, and one of the most entertaining cult films out the UK in the 21st century. So, no shortage of excitement knowing that a sequel to the film is on the way. But by now, it’s over ten years since the last film’s events, when a South London street gang must tangle with aliens invaders on Guy Fawkes Night. So what does Cornish have in mind for a sequel?
In an interview for an upcoming episode of The Playlist Podcast, Cornish hinted that the next film’s plot has everything to do with how much Boyega’s Moses has grown up. “I think what’s interesting is that it is 10 years on,” the director explaind. “I think 15-year-old Moses and 30-year-old Moses are very, very different characters. And I think comparing the boy to the man is immediately interesting and suggests all these thematic ideas that can be expanded upon.”
But what will that entail exactly? Cornish stayed mum on specific story details, but expect an old, more mature (and possibly world-weary?) Moses this time around. “So, it’s really about the age of the character, actually,” Cornish continued, “I don’t want to really say anymore because if I told you the concept, you’d get it. You’d go, ‘Oh, ok!’ What is central to the concept is Moses has grown up. That is what’s central to it. But trust me, it’s still action, adventure, chases, explosions, aliens, but in a new way.”
Cornish’s latest project, his TV debut “Lockwood & Co.,” premieres on Netflix today. So will “Attack The Block 2” be his next project? Maybe, maybe not; Cornish kept quiet on specific details there. But it’s safe to say he’s right in the middle of developing the sequel, and Boyega’s main character from the first film will take center stage once production starts.
