Over the past decade-plus, since the original debut of “Avatar” back in 2009, we have seen James Cameron’s film hit theaters sporadically for some new re-release. Recently, this happened in 2019, after the record-breaking run of “Avengers: Endgame,” when 20th Century Studios wanted to reclaim the #1 box office champ title. Now, it appears, in preparation for the sequel’s debut in December, “Avatar” is making its way back to cinemas. But this time, it’s going to look better than ever.

20th Century Studios has released a brand-new trailer commemorating the latest re-release of “Avatar” next month. As the trailer promises, this version of “Avatar” is going to look better than any other release of the film, with a stunning 4K HDR transfer, which will make everything brighter and more pristine. If you’re someone that enjoys a full-on capital-T Theatrical Experience, then this is it.
It doesn’t appear that anything else has changed with the film. This isn’t James Cameron tinkering with his film and adding new VFX or additional scenes. It’s just a primer to remind people why they should care about the upcoming “Avatar: The Way of Water.” 20th Century Studios (and its parent company, Disney) is hoping that fans haven’t forgotten about the ‘Avatar’ franchise, even if it’s been 13 years since the release of the original film. There’s a promise for four more sequels with ‘Way of Water’ and the untitled “Avatar 3” already basically in the can.
The 4K HDR re-release of “Avatar” is expected to arrive in theaters on September 23. “Avatar: The Way of Water” will arrive in theaters on December 16. You can watch the trailer below.
