The Oscar chances of many film’s visual effects have soared or crashed following their presentations at the annual Visual Effects Branch Bake Off. This year’s will be no exception and after the announcement of the official shortlist those contenders are finally known. After previously being paired down to 20 contenders, 10 titles including “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Irishman” and “Alita: Battle Angel” made the cut.
Surprising omissions included “Ad Astra” and “Ford v. Ferrari.”

The 10 films currently in contention include:
“Alita: Battle Angel”
“Avengers: Endgame”
“Captain Marvel”
“Cats”
“Gemini Man”
“The Irishman”
“The Lion King”
“1917”
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
“Terminator: Dark Fate”
The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
The nominees for the 2020 Academy Awards will be announed bright and early on Jan 13.
