'Barbarella': Sydney Sweeney To Star In Sony's Remake Of The Sci-Fi Classic

When you think of the film “Barbarella,” it’s almost impossible to think of anyone else other than Jane Fonda. The actress is synonymous with the character, thanks in large part to her costuming in the film. Well, it appears Sony is ready for a new “Barbarella,” and the studio has a star it thinks is perfectly suited for the sci-fi adventure.

According to Deadline, Sony is set to remake “Barbarella” with Sydney Sweeney in the lead role. The film is obviously based on the ‘60s comic book series by French artist Jean-Claude Forest. However, most people only associate their knowledge of “Barbarella” with the 1968 film directed by Roger Vadim. Hell, you could probably argue that many people, especially in the population under 40, have only seen stills from the film and haven’t even watched the actual feature.

For those who are unaware, “Barbarella” tells the story of a female adventurer in the far future who goes from planet to planet saving the day. The original comic was much more erotic, often including the title character involved in sexual situations with aliens. However, the film took a much different angle, keeping the sexiness but giving the character a more clear story involving an epic battle with the villain, Durand Durand.

Sweeney is probably best known for her work in the series “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria.” Her performances in both series have earned her Emmy nominations. She’s also set to co-star in the upcoming “Spider-Man” spinoff film, “Madame Web.”

Obviously, the remake of “Barbarella” is still pretty far off, as there’s no writer or director attached to the project. But it’s clear Sony would like to get this going sooner than later, as Sweeney is one of the most in-demand actresses working today.
