'The Penguin': Colin Farrell Teases Opening Moments Of His Upcoming 'Batman' Spinoff Series

While we don’t know when Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson are going to get back together and start production on a sequel to “The Batman,” we know that we’ll be invited back to Gotham soon enough thanks to the first spinoff series, “The Penguin.” And now, thanks to that series’ star, Colin Farrell, we have an idea about when/how the show fits in the continuity.

In a new interview with Extra (seen below), Colin Farrell talked about his excitement for his “The Penguin” series coming to HBO Max. The series, which is written by Lauren LaFranc and directed by Craig Zobel, is expected to follow the rise of Oz, aka Penguin, as he picks up the pieces of Falcone’s criminal organization and rises to take over the Gotham underworld.

“It starts about a week after ‘The Batman’ ends,” teased Farrell. “So, Gotham is still, somewhat, underwater. I read the first script of the first episode and it opens up on my feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office. Even that alone, when I read it, I was like, ‘Oh, Jesus!’ It’s lovely. It’s so well-written. Lauren LeFranc has done such an extraordinary job, and she’s writing the whole thing and showrunning. She is formidable. It’s just an exciting prospect.”

He continued, “I love that character. I was greedy with it. I felt like I didn’t have enough. I wanted to do it more and more and more.”

Fans are excited about the “Penguin” series, not just because of the talent behind the scenes, but mainly because Farrell is one of the biggest highlights in “The Batman.” His version of Penguin is something unique and interesting. He also provided much of what little comedic relief was in Reeves’ ultra-dark ‘Batman’ reboot.

A release date has yet to be announced for “The Penguin,” but it’s clear that production should be starting somewhat soon. Perhaps a late-2023 debut? We shall see.
