Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms ‘Doctor Strange 3’ Is In Early Development

It shouldn’t be a surprise that we’re talking about the potential of a “Doctor Strange 3.” The second film, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” earned nearly $1 billion at the box office. Yet, you never know what is happening with Marvel Studios and what the studio prioritizes. Well, according to one man who definitely should know what’s going on, it appears a third ‘Strange’ is on the horizon.

According to a new interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch teased that a third “Doctor Strange” film is in development. He didn’t go so far as to confirm a title or filmmaker or anything like that. In fact, all he said is that Marvel Studios is being very collaborative.

“They are very open to discussing where we go next,” Cumberbatch said. “Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? He’s a very rich character to play. He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who’s got these extraordinary abilities, so there’s potent stuff to mess about with.”

Even though he’s already talking about a new sequel, Cumberbatch is likely not returning to the “Doctor Strange” franchise for quite some time. At this point, the actor has confirmed that he’s returning to Marvel for “Avengers: Secret Wars” (not “Avengers: Doomsday), but it’s unlikely a third ‘Strange’ movie would come before that. That means, we’re likely looking at late-2027/early-2028 as the earliest time we can see a new “Doctor Strange” film.

The second film definitely did set up the potential for a sequel (as all Marvel films do). Hell, the post-credits scene actually introduced a classic ‘Strange’ character, Clea (played by Charlize Theron). So, it’s likely that whatever happens in the third film, she will be involved.

Other than that, it’s still really early to try to speculate what might happen in the film. Judging by his comments above, it doesn’t even appear that Marvel Studios is sure where to go next with the character.

As mentioned, you’ll likely next see Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027.
