Benedict Cumberbatch Says Doctor Strange Won’t Appear In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios is reportedly set to begin production on “Avengers: Doomsday” during the first half of 2025 with the Russo Brothers behind the camera. We don’t know exactly what story will be told nor do we know which characters are going to be involved, but apparently, one thing is for sure — Doctor Strange won’t show up.

According to a new interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch talked about his future with Marvel Studios, and he explained why his Doctor Strange won’t be making an appearance in “Avengers: Doomsday.”

When he first mentioned how he won’t appear, the actor knew that perhaps he should have stayed quiet.

“Is that a spoiler?” he asked. “Fuck it!”

“Avengers: Doomsday” is just one of two ‘Avengers’ films coming out over the next few years. ‘Doomsday’ is arriving in May 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” is expected to arrive in May 2027. And it’s that latter film that you should expect to see Strange. In fact, Cumberbatch said Doctor Strange is “in a lot” of ‘Secret wars’ and is “quite central to where things might go.”

However, when it came to ‘Doomsday,’ the actor said that Strange not appearing has to do with “the character not aligning with this part of the story.”

Again, it’s difficult to know what he means by all of this because we really don’t know much about the next two ‘Avengers’ films. We know that Robert Downey, Jr. is making his return, but this time as Doctor Doom. We know there are reports that Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are both making a comeback. But outside of that, we have next to no information about the actual plot of ‘Doomsday.’ And we can only speculate about ‘Secret Wars’ because it’s based on a very popular Marvel storyline from the comics.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026.
