‘Black Cat’: Amy Pascal Says Sony Is Still Working On ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-off Film

With Marvel Studios and Sony set to release their second film as partners, “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” it’s obvious that folks are going to ask the producers and people behind the scenes about the status of the rest of the ‘Spider-Man’ film universe. Specifically, people want to know what Sony is doing with the million or so spin-off films that are in and out of development. And perhaps the biggest non-‘Venom’ spin-off that fans seem to be psyched about is none other than “Black Cat.”

Speaking to ScreenRant, ‘Spider-Man’ producer Amy Pascal was asked about the “Black Cat” film, and even though the film has seemingly been stopped and started a number of times, Sony is still hoping to bring the female anti-hero to the big screen.

“I like Black Cat a lot, I think she is a really great character,” said Pascal. “We had her a little bit in the ‘Amazing [Spider-Man]’ movie, but she’s kind of that character that we didn’t really turn into the Black Cat yet. I think that’s a really great character.”

As for future plans for the “Black Cat” solo film, the producer said, “We’re still working on that. I think we have plans for that.”

Black Cat is probably best summed up as the Spider-Man equivalent of Catwoman. Both are feline-themed characters that have a checkered past and vaguely cat-like abilities. Both are often seen as love interests with the respective heroes, and both ending up being problematic matches. So, it’s obvious why Sony would be interested in bringing the character to the big screen.

As mentioned, the “Black Cat” film has gone through a couple of different iterations in the last year or so. First, the film started as a team-up film called “Silver and Black,” which featured Black Cat alongside Silver Sable. Then, inexplicably, the films were split into two features, one focusing on the latter colorful character, and the other film becoming a “Black Cat” solo film.

We’ve heard names like Gina Prince-Bythewood attached to the film, when it was called “Silver and Black.” However, with Prince-Bythewood moving on to other projects, it’s unclear what her status on any potential “Black Cat” or “Silver Sable” films are at this time.

But clearly, with “Venom” making almost $900 million at the global box office, and “Morbius” set to hit theaters next year, Sony isn’t slowing down anytime soon with its ‘Spider-Man’ spin-off plans. So, it’s still likely we’ll see a “Black Cat” feature at some point.
