Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Off 'Silver & Black' Goes Back To The Drawing Board

We got some bad news for those fans of the upcoming Spider-Man universe that Sony is brewing, and die-hard Silver Sable and Black Cat fans. It appears that the forthcoming “Silver & Black” film, which would have combined the two “Spider-Man” characters into one film isn’t arriving anytime soon.

According to Exhibitor Relations, Sony has taken “Silver & Black” off the schedule completely. Originally scheduled for a February 8, 2019 release date, the studio has put the superhero spin-off film on the back burner for now. Worse, Deadline is reporting that “Silver & Black” is going back to the development stage, with a rewrite scheduled. This news essentially tells you that the film is going back to the drawing board and neither the director nor studio was happy with the story that was rewritten earlier this year by “Captain Marvel” screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet and “Chaos Walking” author Lindsey Beer.

“Silver & Black” is still under the directorial eye of Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is best known for her films “Beyond the Lights” and “Love & Basketball.” However, we’ll have to see what happens next, as it appears this film won’t be hitting theaters anytime soon. After the huge misstep of “The Amazing Spider-Man” films, it’s critical for Sony to get their “Spider-Man” franchise back on track and that’s possibly why they’re delaying “Silver & Black” in order to get it just right.” Additionally, the first real Spider-verse film made by Sony on their own —Marvel produced, wrote and shaped the Tom HollandSpider-Man: Homecoming” movie— “Venom” is already suffering some bad buzz, mocked online for its silly trailer. It’s possible the company may want to see how “Venom” lands with audiences in October before releasing yet another Spider-Man film five months later.

Additionally, since Spider-Man is over at Marvel currently and will be there until ‘Spider-Man Homecoming 3,’ Sony is in a very awkward place where they have to develop a Spider-Man universe without their Spider-Man. Hence, “Venom” as a standalone movie, with possibly only tertiary connections to the world Tom Holland is in (maybe we’ll get a cameo and some winks and nods, but don’t expect something essential). That’s an extremely challenging part of the puzzle Sony needs to figure out so it may not be the worst thing in the world if the studio treads lightly and conservatively. Dropping the ball on the franchise without Marvel will look doubly embarrassing.

Replacing “Silver & Black” on the schedule for Sony is the film “Greyhound,” a World War II film that stars Tom Hanks. “Greyhound” was initially scheduled for April 5, 2019.
