The 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has concluded yet another wonderful week of cinematic discoveries. Previously announced awards were given to a variety of contributors to global cinema. Russell Crowe received the Crystal Globe For Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, the Festival President’s Award For Contribution to Czech Cinematography was presented to Daniela Kolářová, and the Festival President’s Award was bestowed on Alicia Vikander, Ewan McGregor, and Robin Wright.
The festival concluded with the competitive and non-statutory awards presentations and a special screening of Bobby Farrelly’s “Champions” starring Woody Harrelson.
For the Crystal Globe Competition, the Bulgarian drama “Blaga’s Lessons,” directed by Stephan Komandarev, took the Grand Prix, while the film’s lead Eli Skorcheva took the Best Actress award. The Best Actor award went to Herbert Nordrum for his role in the Swedish film “The Hypnosis.” The Special Jury Prize was awarded to the German-Iranian film “Empty Nets” by director Behrooz Karamizade. The Best Director award was presented to Babak Jalali for the American dramedy “Fremont.” A Special Jury Mention was awarded to Cyril Aris’s documentary “Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano.” Vincent Perez’s “The Edge of the Blade” was awarded the Právo Audience Award, which festival attendees voted on.
In the Proxima Competition, the Grand Prix was awarded to the South Korean drama “Birth,” directed by Yoo Ji-young. The Special Jury Prize went to the Indian-Nepalese film “Guras” by director Saurav Rai, and a Special Jury Prize was awarded to the Czech film “Brutal Heat” directed by Albert Hospodářský.
The 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will be held from June 28 to July 6, 2024.
