For years, William Hurt was one of the familiar faces gracing various MCU projects. And it would appear, his character, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who debuted in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” was set to continue to be a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, back in March, the actor passed away, leaving a hole in the ‘Avengers’ franchise. Well, that’s where Harrison Ford comes in.
One of the worst-kept rumors in the MCU has officially come true, as Deadline is reporting that Harrison Ford has signed on to take over Hurt’s role as Thunderbolt Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as people have assumed Thunderbolt Ross would play a role in the forthcoming “Thunderbolts,” apparently Ford’s first appearance will, in fact, be in “Captain America: New World Order,” where he’ll star opposite Anthony Mackie, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, and Carl Lumbly.
The report does mention that ‘New World Order’ is supposed to lead into “Thunderbolts,” but it doesn’t mention whether or not Ford will take part in the film. That said, it would be incredibly unlikely to sign Ford for ‘Captain America 4’ and not have him also appear in “Thunderbolts,” especially since the latter is based on a comic book series that features Thunderbolt Ross putting together a team of sometimes-villains to fight evil.
In addition to the exciting news of Ford arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s worth noting that many fans will assume this means Red Hulk will be making an appearance. As the name implies, Red Hulk is a character who has all the strength of the Hulk but is, well, red. And in the comics, Red Hulk is the superpowered alter-ego of Thunderbolt Ross. So, if you were wondering what Harrison Ford might look like as a hulking red beast, you’re (probably) in luck.
“Captain America: New World Order” is directed by Julius Onah and is expected to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024.
