'Spider-Man 3': Charlie Cox Thankfully Quashes The Rumor That Daredevil Will Show Up In The Sony Sequel

If you’re someone like me (aka a comic book nerd), then you’ve no doubt heard the rumor making its way around the fandom film blogs that the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 3’ could feature an appearance by Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox. As with many of these rumors, the origins are flimsy and there’s not a shred of proof to back it up, but alas, when you have the idea of Spider-Man teaming up with the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen on the big screen, you’d be silly not to speculate.

But as is the case with many rumors of this ilk, all it takes is one question to one person that would have intimate knowledge of the situation, such as Charlie Cox, to either confirm or deny it. And speaking to Comicbook.com, Cox completely denies the rumor, hopefully putting to end the speculation. As if previous debunking wasn’t enough…

“I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it,” Cox said. “If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.”

Wait, you mean to tell me that an appearance from a Marvel TV character that Kevin Feige wouldn’t even find a place for in “Avengers: Infinity War” or “Avengers: Endgame” (and Lord knows, there were plenty of places to stick in a Daredevil cameo) isn’t going to show up in a Marvel Studios film released by rival studio Sony? Say it ain’t so!

Sarcasm aside, we can easily file this story in the ever-growing folder of rumors that started as unfounded hearsay and/or fan speculation, only to then become headline-making news. That is to say, the file set aside for silly crap. Obviously, Cox does say that it could possibly be another actor taking on the Daredevil mantle, but again, that is not anything remotely close to proof of the crossover happening.

Of course, being an actor with a brain and hopes for a big career, Cox does go on to explain how he would be totally game for a reappearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if there happens to be a place for him down the line.

“Look, I had a great time,” he said. “I’m so grateful I got to play that character as long as I did. Of course, I’d love to keep going. I’d love to be involved with it.”

Cox added, “As a fan of the Marvel movies, I’ve loved the little stuff where they pop up here and there but because we were on Netflix, we weren’t able to do as much for legal reasons, I don’t know why. But I love the idea of Jessica [Jones] and Matt [Murdock] showing up in the background or Matt as a lawyer advising Peter Parker. That’d be really, really cool.”

Sure, it definitely would be cool. But the idea that Marvel Studios would debut a brand-new take on a fan-favorite character or reintroduce a Netflix character into the greater MCU in a ‘Spider-Man’ sequel made for Sony seems a bit far-fetched. Especially when you consider the legal hurdles just get to any semblance of character crossover between the two studios in regards to Spider-Man.

But hey, “Daredevil” ranks as my favorite of the Netflix/Marvel series (the final season is actually really good), so I’d be down to see Cox return to the character. Let’s just wait until there’s a spot that makes a little sense.
