Charlize Theron is no stranger to kicking ass on the big screen, but for “Atomic Blonde,” the actress had a particularly arduous regimen to get into shape. “I worked for three hours a day for three months and there were some days that I could not get out of bed,” she revealed at last month’s CinemaCon (via Variety). Well, the effort paid off, as she more than meets the challenge of “John Wick” co-director David Leitch‘s film.
Based on the graphic novel “The Coldest City” by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, the film finds Theron playing an MI6 agent caught up in spy game intrigue. Here’s the official synopsis:
Oscar winner Charlize Theron explodes into summer in ATOMIC BLONDE, a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.
The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
Co-starring John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones, “Atomic Blonde” opens on July 28th.
