Chris Hemsworth Says He Was "Exhausted" & "Underwhelmed" By Pre-'Ragnarok' Thor Appearances

It’s difficult to imagine that any of the actors involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be anything but elated to work on their own solo film. However, when you’re the character with arguably two of the worst films in the 21 movie line-up, the prospect of returning to the franchise could be a bit exhausting. And that’s exactly what happened to Chris Hemsworth, when he was asked to come back and do a third ‘Thor’ film. But as he discusses in a new interview, it all worked out for the best, finally.

The original “Thor” is one of those films that some MCU fans think is an underrated joy. For others, however, the Kenneth Branagh-directed film is easily the worst of the Phase 1 Marvel films and not really worth revisiting. The second solo film, “Thor: The Dark World,” is actually worse than the first, by a large margin, and is commonly thought of as the very worst product that Marvel Studios has released in its 10+ years.

And as Hemsworth describes in a new interview with Yahoo, the only way that the actor could be excited about the prospect of returning to the ‘Thor’ franchise is if there was a major overhaul. Enter Taika Waititi.

“When we came into ‘Ragnarok,’ I was sort of exhausted of what I’d been doing and a little sort of underwhelmed by what I was putting out there, you know?” Hemsworth said.

He continued, “That was no fault of any director or writer, that was me personally. It felt like I’d put myself in a box with what the character could do. So on ‘Ragnarok,’ it was about breaking all the rules, and kinda going ‘as soon as it feels familiar, do something different’, and Taika [Waititi] – the director – had the same vision, and the same, I guess, guts to just roll the dice and [do the] ‘anything goes’ kind of thing. That was so liberating and freeing, you know, to sort of breakaway who the character was prior.”

Hemsworth has long been one of the more honest cast members of the MCU, especially recently. As the first major chapter in the MCU comes to a close with “Avengers: Endgame,” the actor has been brutally honest about the ups and downs of his time with Marvel Studios. And if ‘Endgame’ marks the end of Thor’s appearances in the universe (which may or may not be accurate, according to Tessa Thompson), then at least there’s the post-’Ragnarok’ era that Hemsworth can hang his hat on.
