Remember last summer’s high-profile reboot of the “Child’s Play” franchise, presenting a new version of the toy-turned-murderer Chucky? Okay, well now you can forget all about that film and be reminded about the decades-long franchise that preceded it and continues to this day with the upcoming series, “Chucky.” Confused yet?

As seen in the new teaser for “Chucky,” the upcoming series that will make its debut on both SYFY and USA Network in 2021 wants to remind viewers of their deep love of the original “Child’s Play” franchise and its iconic murderous doll at the center. The teaser doesn’t really explain what the new show will be about and if the plot will be a direct follow-up to the most recent pre-reboot sequel, “Cult of Chucky,” which debuted in 2017. But it’s clear that the reboot from last year is definitely not part of the equation.
For those not familiar with the long history of the Chucky character, the original “Child’s Play” debuted back in 1988 and was followed in short order by two sequels in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The franchise then took a break and was revived in 1998 with “Bride of Chucky,” taking the franchise in a bold, new direction that emphasized the more comedic and silly elements of the series. From there, fans were given “Seed of Chucky,” “Curse of Chucky,” and the aforementioned “Cult of Chucky,” featuring largely the same crew that has been with the franchise for years now.
“Chucky” is the latest attempt by franchise creator Don Mancini to continue the franchise that started back in 1988 and has no connection to the reboot from last year. In fact, Mancini made it clear from previous social media posts and interviews that he is not a fan of the idea of a reboot and the new origin story for the Chucky doll. So, if you were let down by the reboot and hoping for a return to the glory days of the “Child’s Play” franchise, the SYFY/USA series seems to be right up your alley.
There’s no official release date, but “Chucky” is set to arrive sometime in 2021. You can watch the teaser below.
