Sorry Classic 'Child's Play' Fans, The New Remake Will Feature Mark Hamill As The Voice Of Chucky

Horror reboots and remakes are a sore subject for many genre fans. When classic horror films like “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” all got the reboot/remake treatment, old-school fans cried foul. Alas, now with Blumhouse doing it right with “Halloween,” there is a new acceptance by many that perhaps there is a chance that a reboot can work. But in the case of “Child’s Play,” it would appear that not many original fans are pleased with all the changes being made. And they’re damn sure not going to be happy with the new voice of the slasher icon Chucky.

Courtesy of the actor himself, on Twitter, Mark Hamill has revealed that he will be the voice of the killer doll that stalks folks in the upcoming reboot of “Child’s Play.” While we still don’t really know what the doll will look like and what his voice will actually sound like, Hamill is known to be one of the better voice actors working today. And of course, many will recognize him as that guy Luke Skywalker in those outer space laser-sword movies.

But the addition of Hamill is sure to continue to piss off fans of the classic “Child’s Play” series, who have grown to idolize the original voice of the doll, Brad Dourif. Unlike the franchises named earlier, “Child’s Play” has spawned a number of sequels, and has found a second life in the new millennium as a sort of cult horror-comedy series. Hell, the latest film in the franchise, “Cult of Chucky,” was just released in 2017. While the film franchise hasn’t had a box office hit in decades, these straight-to-video releases have built a devoted following and much of that appreciation from fans is due to the creator of the franchise, Don Mancini.

Mancini has made it abundantly clear that he’s not happy with the direction of the remake. He’s actually said on multiple occasions that the studio wanted his name to be on this new “Child’s Play,” but he has said no each and every time. Mancini has gone on Twitter to discuss his displeasure at the new film’s changes.

Either way, Hollywood does what Hollywood does, and that means fans will have a new look and sound for Chucky in the “Child’s Play” remake hitting theaters on June 21.
