Criterion December Titles Include David Cronenberg’s ‘Crash,’ Alejandro Iñárritu’s ‘Amores Perros’ & More

The Criterion Collection could easily take a month off in 2020, maybe two, and rest easy at winning the title for best cinephile DVD/Blu-Ray company (how many years in a row they’ve already won that title is something we’ll leave you to debate with friends). 2020 has already included an amazing and essential box set from French New Wave legend Agnès Varda, another upcoming box set from Federico Fellini which is sure to astound, and plenty of landmark, long-awaited soon-to-come releases like “Moonstruck,Jim Jarmusch‘s hip hop/ninja assassin mash-up, “Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai,” Claudia Weill‘s seminal feminist indie classic “Girlfriends,Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite” class warfare drama, David Lynch‘s “Elephant Man,” and earlier this summer, “Come & See,” the legendary WWII film from Soviet director Elem Klimov.

Well, they’re capping off 2020 with a major final month. And kink cinema lovers should rejoice. The crown jewel in their December line-up is David Cronenberg‘s transgressive masterwork, “Crash,” which has basically been unavailable on DVD or Blu-Ray for several years now. An adaptation of the JG Ballard novel, released in 1996, and starring James Spader, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, Deborah Kara Unger, and Rosanna Arquette, “Crash” is some startingly outré shit about a group of symphorophiliacs who are sexually aroused by car crashes. The film was released in both NC-17 and R-rated versions in the U.S. and shocked both critics and audiences at the time. It’s some gooooood shit!

December also includes Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s dark indie classic “Amores Perros” which not only put the Oscar winner on the international map for cinema and began the road to making Gael García Bernal a household name, it arguably jumpstarted the Mexican film renaissance that included Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Rodrigo García, and Iñárritu.

Lastly, December includes two films previously released in Criterion’s collection, but not available on Blu-Ray, including Robert Bresson‘s heartwrenching humanist masterpiece “Mouchette” and William Greaves‘ experimental hybrid docu/fiction, “Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One.”

If you think this year was good, just imagined what could have been. If you saw the recent press release about the upcoming Wong Kar Wai 4K touring theatrical retrospective (which involves Janus Films and Criterion), which was delayed due to the pandemic, you can easily read between the lines. 2021 should be another incredible year for both Criterion fans and devotees of the great Wong Kar Wai. AMORES PERROS

CRASH
For this icily erotic fusion of flesh and machine, David Cronenberg adapted J. G. Ballard’s future-shock novel of the 1970s into one of the most singular and provocative films of the 1990s. A traffic collision involving a disaffected commercial producer, James (James Spader), and an enigmatic doctor, Helen (Holly Hunter), brings them, along with James’s wife, Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger, in a sublimely detached performance), together in a crucible of blood and broken glass—and it’s not long before they are all initiated into a kinky, death-obsessed underworld of sadomasochistic car-crash fetishists for whom twisted metal and scar tissue are the ultimate turn-ons. Controversial from the moment it premiered at Cannes—where it won a Special Jury Prize “for originality, for daring, and for audacity”—Crash has since taken its place as a key text of late-twentieth-century cinema, a disturbingly seductive treatise on the relationships between humanity and technology, sex and violence, that is as unsettling as it is mesmerizing.

MOUCHETTE
Robert Bresson plumbs great reservoirs of feeling with Mouchette, one of the most searing portraits of human desperation ever put on film. With a dying mother, an absent, alcoholic father, and a baby brother in need of care, the teenage Mouchette seeks solace and respite from her circumstances in the nature of the French countryside and daily routine. Bresson deploys his trademark minimalist style to heartbreaking effect in this essential work of French filmmaking, a hugely empathetic drama that elevates its trapped protagonist into one of the cinema’s most memorable tragic figures.

SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM: TWO TAKES BY WILLIAM GREAVES
In his one-of-a-kind fiction/documentary hybrid Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One, the pioneering William Greaves presides over a beleaguered film crew in New York’s Central Park, leaving them to try to figure out what kind of movie they’re making. A couple enacts a break-up scenario over and over, a documentary crew films a crew filming the crew, locals wander casually into the frame: the project defies easy description. Yet this wildly innovative sixties counterculture landmark remains one of the most tightly focused and insightful movies ever made about making movies, expanded thirty-five years later by its unconventional follow up, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take 2½. The “sequel” sees Take One actors Audrey Henningham and Shannon Baker reunited in a more personal, metatheatrical exploration of the effects of the passage of time on technology, the artistic process, and relationships—real and fabricated.
