Got a Tip?

Criterion Adds ‘Celine & Julie Go Boating,’ ‘Secrets & Lies,’ ‘World Of Wong Kar-Wai’ & More In March

It feels like every month we come to you, dear reader, and explain why The Criterion Collection is going to take more money from you. Each and every month, Criterion announces new releases that truly feel like “must-haves.” And March 2021 is definitely no different.

We’ve already covered the big March 2021 release from Criterion, the incredible box set, “The World of Wong Kar-wai.” That is a must-own for just about anyone who likes films, especially for those that maybe haven’t fully dived into the works of one of the best directors to ever live. So, needless to say, you’re going to want to buy that.

But March isn’t just Wong Kar-wai Month. There are some other great Criterion releases that you’ll want to shell out some cash for. For many, the biggest release is going to be Jacques Rivette’s long-unavailable “Céline and Julie Go Boating.” The acclaimed film from the French New Wave stars Dominique Labourier as Julie and Juliet Berto as Céline, two disparate women become unknowingly involved in a crazy adventure involving a haunted house, psychotropic candy, and a murder-mystery melodrama.

Other releases coming in March also include Albert Brooks’ “Defending Your Life.” In the film, Brooks wears multiple hats as the writer, director, and star in a story about Judgment City, the purgatory-like destination that souls venture to before they fully transition into the afterlife. There’s also Mike Leigh’s Palme d’Or–winning, devastating family drama, “Secrets & Lies” and Djibril Diop Mambéty’s convention-shattering debut, “Touki bouki.”

As always, you can pre-order these new offerings from Criterion’s website. Happy spending!
