Netflix Announces 'The Crown' Will End After Season 5

All good things must come to an end. And when you’re a streaming series on Netflix, that end normally comes around Season 5. So, with that in mind, we’re here to inform you that the Emmy-winning drama series “The Crown” has officially announced that the fifth season will be its last.

Despite the recent announcement that actress Imelda Staunton would take over for Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth in Season 5 of the series, it appears that unlike her predecessors, Staunton will only get one batch of episodes to leave her mark. This announcement will likely come as a surprise for many, as fans were fully expected the actress to at least have two seasons, like Colman and Claire Foy before her, but also because the real-life inspiration for the character has had so many recent stories come up that some thought “The Crown” could go on indefinitely.

Alas, creator and showrunner Peter Morgan has other ideas in mind for the series.

“At the outset, I had imagined ‘The Crown’ running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” said Morgan (via THR). “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” said Staunton. “As an actor, it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honored to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking ‘The Crown’ to its conclusion.”

So, it’s clear that we won’t get to see any of the fallout from the whole Jeffrey Epstein/Prince Andrew scandal or the Meghan Markle/Prince Harry situation on the Netflix series. Instead, all we know is that Staunton will play the Queen as the series ventures “into the 21st Century,” said Morgan. We’ll just have to see how far ahead the series decides to go.

Season 3 of “The Crown” premiered in November 2019, so we still likely have a couple of more years left to enjoy the drama.
