Got a Tip?

David Ayer Teases His ‘Suicide Squad’ Cut: “It’s Coming” & “Something’s Going To Be Revealed”

Will David Ayer‘s cut of “Suicide Squad” ever see the light of day? It’s something Ayer teased quite a bit this year in interviews and elsewhere, even stating that new DC Studios co-head James Gunn had interest in releasing it. There are no guarantees here, but Ayer still sounds optimistic about the possibility in a new interview with Total Film, even if his “Suicide Squad” reaching fans is an uphill battle.

“I’m going to be hopeful. You know, there are a lot of people that are invested in certain narratives that don’t want it to see the light of day,” Ayer told Total Film. “So there’s an immense political headwind against it, because if that cut were made public, the cowardliness and the whole just general shittiness of how the film’s been treated, and how the actors have had this great work that they’d done taken away…that narrative blows up once people see the movie. But it’s coming. Something’s going to happen. Something’s going to be revealed. The truth always comes out. It always comes out.”

Obviously, Ayer still feels strongly about how “Suicide Squad” was received by critics and audiences in 2016. And the director insists his version of the film was much better until Warner Bros. took it out of his hands. On a September episode of Jon Bernthal‘s “Real Ones” podcast, Ayer claimed studio heads were initially very high on the film’s dailies, but behind-the-scene politics ruined the movie. “It was like “Game Of Thrones” in there,” Ayer described the studio at the time. “The palace politics were insane. And the shit that was really going on? Bro! It’s like, ok, you know?”

But Ayer keeps sticking to his counter-narrative that the failure of “Suicide Squad” wasn’t his fault, and his cut of the film will prove his point. “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release,” Ayer shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, back in August. “The interest in my cut being show[n] seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s [sic] time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

Ayer’s career has yet to rebound since “Suicide Squad,” but maybe “The Beekeeper,” in theaters in January, will help him move on. But don’t expect the director to let go of the “Suicide Squad” situation any time soon. “Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f*cked by someone you hate,” Ayer said during his appearance on Bernthal’s “Real Ones.” “The big one is “Suicide Squad.” That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”

Maybe Ayer will get redemption when his cut of the film ever gets released. Or maybe “Suicide Squad” was always a misfire and Ayer is caught in the blame game with Warner Bros. over its lack of success. Whatever the case, one feels for Ayer in how uncharitable critics have been to him since the 2016 movie, although his comments on the situation may be a bit too candid. But after talking such a big game about his version of “Suicide Squad,” it’d be exciting for it to get released just to see what all the fuss is about.
