While we haven’t had a David Cronenberg feature since 2014, over that time, the filmmaker has been flexing his acting muscles in several roles, with two just in the last year alone, “Disappearance at Clifton Hill” and “Falling,” respectively. And it appears his 2020 acting journey isn’t over yet, as fans of “Star Trek: Discovery” shockingly discovered in an ad for a future episode.

That’s right, David Cronenberg is set to appear in an episode of “Star Trek: Discovery.” Or at least, that’s what the trailer for next week’s episode, “Die Trying,” seems to point to. Now, I must admit that I’m not a ‘Star Trek’ fan (they’re called Treksters, right?), but it would appear that Cronenberg is playing a man that knows how to use a futuristic computer. Or he just stumbled on set and started moving his hands around and the filmmakers figured they could just use the footage? Or maybe I don’t have a clue and the brief appearance in the trailer doesn’t really give us much context? Yes, it’s the latter.
That said, it is fun to see Cronenberg pop up in a ‘Star Trek’ series. And honestly, if for no other reason, it’s just nice to have the filmmaker keep people on their toes. You just never know where he might show up. Maybe, it’s just his way of trolling fans, forcing them to watch a random ‘Discovery’ episode just to see him briefly show up? Will he show up in ‘Fast & Furious’ next? Mr. Cronenberg, the world is your oyster! Enjoy it!
For the rest of us, who doesn’t need a boost of joy during a rough week? And even if we don’t watch the episode, it’s nice to know that something pretty cool is happening over at CBS All Access, at least for one week.
“Star Trek: Discovery” is in the middle of its third season, and the next episode is set to debut on November 12. You can watch the trailer below:
