Every studio is trying to create a new universe these days, blatantly following in the footsteps of Disney/Marvel’s unprecedented, box-office reign. These have been the modern trials and tribulations of the major studios, whether it be Warner Bros.’ dissolution of the DC Universe or Universal’s botched attempt wielding its lineup of classic monsters. Despite the mixed results, admiration could be given to these studios for the process of Universe Building, while derivative, is quite ambitious. This type of ambition can be seen in the previews of “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu”: a project that could have the same franchise-building, unexpected success similar “The Lego Movie.”

The synopsis of the film is:
“A young man joins forces with Detective Pikachu to unravel the mystery behind his father’s disappearance. Chasing clues through the streets of Ryme City, the dynamic duo soon discover a devious plot that poses a threat to the Pokémon universe.”
The story of “Detective Pikachu” carries the same familiar blockbuster elements: a destined hero must go on a journey to save the universe – in this case, the Pokémon universe. However, what’s intriguing about this film is its amalgam of different genre tropes and a stylistic overtone that seems wholly unique. Along with delivering the blockbuster experience, audiences can also expect influences of science-fiction and neo-noir. The environment of Ryme City is strikingly similar to the Los Angeles of “Blade Runner.” Even the film’s DP is a Ridley Scott affiliate; John Mathieson (“Gladiator,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “Logan”) brings a vibrant palette to accommodate the animation of the creatures.
Director Rob Letterman carries a fine sensibility for family-fun adventures, having delivered the goods with “Goosebumps” after a short career in animation. He constructed the story of the film alongside Tom McCarthy, of all artists, which elevates the expectations of this film. And of course, leading the cast is the presence and personality of Ryan Reynolds, providing facial reactions and structure via motion capture. Despite “Deadpool” being at the other end of the content spectrum, that same Ryan Reynolds charm is still present for the voice of Pikachu.
“Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” also co-stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Ken Watanabe and is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on May 10, 2019.
