Dev Patel Tested For 'Star Wars: Episode 7' In Past Few Weeks, But Didn't Get Cast

Months of speculation preceded the official cast announcement of “Star Wars: Episode 7” earlier this week (which we went into further detail about right here), and while many rushed to write thinkpieces about the lack of diversity and women in the film, it was perhaps a bit premature. There is still more casting to come, including a major female role, which means there is likely more speculation to come before everything is locked down. But until we know more, here’s a bit of trivia you might want to hang on to.

THR has provided a quick overview of the lengthy and very secretive casting process kicked off by J.J. Abrams last August, a lot of which involved swearing actors, agents, managers and more to absolute secrecy. And one actor who tried out, but didn’t get a role, was “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The Newsroom” star Dev Patel. Indeed, highlighting how close to the wire this has all been, Patel apparently tested only three weeks ago (for which role is not clear — perhaps the part John Boyega or Domhnall Gleeson got?) — but didn’t get chosen.

Indeed, the casting net has been thrown pretty wide for the sequel and we’re certain more names will emerge of those who met Abrams but didn’t get the call back. “Star Wars 7” goes to a galaxy far, far away on December 18, 2015.
