This Friday sees the return of Ben Affleck‘s Christian Wolff in “The Accountant 2,” which has Gavin O’Connor also back directing with Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, and J.K. Simmons taking key roles too.
The studio has sent us a final trailer to share and highlights the brotherly angle of the sequel, as the last installment had Wolff, a Neurodevigent action hero and forensic accountant, discover his mercenary brother was aligned with the film’s antagonist, only for them to team up in this new adventure by taking down a new group of ruthless killers.
Amazon MGM Studios‘ official synopsis for “The Accountant 2” reads:
Christian Wolff (Affleck) has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax (Bernthal), to help. In partnership with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.
Nothing has been greenlit, but O’Connor has responded to the idea of a follow-up installment to “The Accountant 2” when speaking to IndieWire and isn’t set on how to accomplish that.
“In my heart, I don’t want to do another puzzle movie because they’re so hard to do. Just to create this sort of convol— I don’t want to say convoluted. But this complex, byzantine puzzle plot. I just want to do something entirely different again. There will be certain people, oh, this movie is too different than the first one. I mean, yeah, why would I do the same thing over again. For me, as a storyteller, that’s so wildly uninteresting. So, I do want to do that, but we just have to sustain the story without doing a puzzle plot, which we’ll have to figure out,” O’Connor said of a third installment.
Bernthal can also be seen in the new Marvel series “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+ and is developing his own “Punisher” spinoff special for the streaming service.
