With one directorial feature under his belt, 2007’s "Déficit," Gael García Bernal is ready for a second. Screen Daily reports that he’s eyeing to mount his next movie, "Chicuarotes," in early 2016. “The film will follow a group of kids — around 14, 15 years old — who live by the lake. They’re economically poor but not miserable or unhappy, basically living in paradise," Bernal told the trade. “The narrative of the film follows their dreams of moving up economically and socially. They want to stop working and make lots of money. I can’t tell you now how they attempt to do this but it’s a comedy — a very dark comedy.”
Speaking of comedy, "Napoleon Dynamite" helmer Jared Hess has been assigned Disney‘s "Overnight at 42nd Street.” Penned by Oren Uziel ("22 Jump Street"), Variety reports that the movie, not unlike "Home Alone," follows a father and son who spend all night in a toy store. Casting will be key, as production won’t begin until the right father/son pairing is found.
In the midst of production on "Snowden," Oliver Stone is being sought for another true life tale. According to Sputnik, producers are seeking the director to helm a drama about murdered Russian journalist and TV presenter Vladislav Listyev, who was killed in 1995. The crime remains unsolved, and many believe it was politically motivated. Currently there is a competition underway to write the screenplay, and producers hope to have the completed movie in cinemas for 2017, released on the anniversary of Listyev’s death.
