During the beginning of his filmmaking career, Edgar Wright was probably best known for his comedic work. Films like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” cemented his status as one of the very best directors in the world. But with his last film, “Baby Driver,” Wright showed that he’s not limited to straight comedies, as he flexed his action muscles. And with the upcoming “Last Night in Soho,” the director is venturing into the realm of a psychological thriller.
While we don’t know the exact plot of the upcoming film, Focus Features has announced that fans will get a chance to check out his latest work in September 2020. Production is said to be underway now on the psychological thriller that is, obviously, set in the Soho section of London. And considering how filmmaking works, it makes sense that we’d, unfortunately, still be a year away from the film’s release.
Interestingly, Wright’s best box office success to date, the aforementioned “Baby Driver,” was released in the middle of the summer in 2017. However, perhaps considering that’s a fun, action film, Focus decided that the thriller would be better served in the fall and closer to Halloween.
The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham. Wright co-wrote the script for “Last Night in Soho” with writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. She’s probably best known for her work on the Showtime series “Penny Dreadful.” But ‘Soho’ isn’t the only high-profile film that the writer has on deck. In addition to Wright’s film, she’s also a co-writer on the upcoming war film “1917,” from director Sam Mendes.
Focus Features will release “Last Night in Soho” on September 25, 2020. For those outside of North America, Universal will distribute the thriller, but no date has been officially announced.
