It was only a matter of time before pop culture’s lingering obsession with true crime leaked its way into rom-coms, right? Well, Lionsgate‘s “F Marry Kill” isn’t exactly a rom-com, but it’s another example of true crime getting tossed into a familiar premise. In this case, it’s a girl trying to find Mr. Right through dating apps, only for a recent string of murders referenced on her favorite podcast to lead her to believe she might be dating the killer.

Is this set-up novel? Is it cringy? Inevitable? All of that and more? Whatever the case may be, it’s bound to find an audience in December, thanks to “Pretty Little Liars” alum Lucy Hale in the starring role.

When true-crime junkie Eva Vaugh is shoved into the dating app world by her besties on her 30th birthday, she suddenly finds herself at the center of a real-life murder case. As new details about the murders are revealed on her favorite podcast, she realizes that one of the three men she’s dating could be the infamous ‘Swipe Right Killer’ terrorizing the city. Now it’s up to Eva and her ride-or-die friends to figure out which date is a f***boy, a potential husband, or a killer in this comedy-thriller.
Along with Hale, “F Marry Kill” also stars Samer Salem, Virginia Gardner, Jedidiah Goodacre, Brendan Morgan, Brooke Nevin, and Bethany Brown.
Laura Murphy directs “F Marry Kill” from a script by Ivan Diaz and Meghan Brown. Richard Alan Reid, Michael Philip, and Jason Moring produce through Buzzfeed Studios.
“F Marry Kill” won’t make any critics’ top 10 lists at the end of the year, but let’s be honest: this movie sounds like the guiltiest of pleasures.
