‘F1’ Sequel: Racing CEO Teases Possible Sequel At Apple TV Event

Apple’s Formula 1 creative partnership keeps widening beyond the track, and at the company’s Apple TV press day in Los Angeles, the conversation drifted to whether “F1: The Movie” could get another lap. Asked about a potential follow-up, Stefano Domenicali (the sport’s president and CEO) stressed there was nothing to announce yet formally—but suggested any sequel would take time to earn.

“We’re going to tell you something more in the future,” Domenicali said. “Never say never. But we need to digest the success of this movie more, because it was unique. And if you want to think of a new one, it has to be really, very, very good. Therefore, if this will happen, it will not be for next year. But maybe next year we’re going to be here [at the press day], and hopefully we have something more to announce [then].”

This timing is telling: Apple’s relationship with F1 is expanding beyond a single film. In November of last year, Formula 1 announced that Apple would be the sport’s exclusive U.S. broadcast partner starting in 2026, with Apple TV carrying practice, qualifying, sprint sessions, and Grands Prix, alongside broader amplification across Apple News, Maps, Music, Sports, and Fitness+.

Formula 1 noted the obvious success of “F1: The Movie,” which presumably was the impetus for the partnership: the Apple Original Film was a huge worldwide hit, grossing $631 million. It also landed four Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Visual Effects, Sound, and Film Editing.

The first film was directed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”) from a script by Ehren Kruger and starred Brad Pitt, with the production bringing the sport’s real-world machinery into the filmmaking process. Will Kosinski, Pitt and its super producer Jerry Bruckheimer return for more racing gold? Stay tuned.
