Got a Tip?

First Official Images, Poster & Synopsis For ‘Primer’ Director Shane Carruth’s Sundance Entry ‘Upstream Color’

Upstream ColorIt was just over a year ago when word arrived that Shane Carruth was finally going to be starting work on his sophomore directorial effort "Upstream Color." Of course, not much was known about the project and word pretty much dried up from that point on, but it looks like the director has been working on the sly. The Sundance Film Festival unveiled the first part of their slate today, and among the pleasant surprises is the news that Carruth's film is finished and will be premiering in Park City.

It's a bit of a homecoming for Carruth, whose mindbending "Primer" turned heads at the festival in 2004 and went on to play a number of major fests around the world including Cannes and Toronto. And once again, an air of mystery surrounds his latest effort. Carruth himself is taking a role alongside Amy Seimetz ("The Myth Of The American Sleepover"), Andrew Sensenig ("I Love You Phillip Morris") and Thiago Martins ("City Of God") in a movie where even the official synopsis doesn't reveal too much:

A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.

A few more odds and sods of details came out in the initial casting process for the movie, but they are equally enigmatic. Take for example the character of Kris, described thusly: "This is the lead part, and beyond involving a severe haircut change in the film, little is said beyond her being intelligent and plain." Okay. But it is described as a romance/drama/thriller so perhaps it won't be as trippy as "Primer," but it certainly seems like it will be just as unique.
