With the COVID-19 pandemic throwing scheduling of productions all into chaos, it’s understandable that we’re beginning to see some features see their casts drastically change over the course of development. And that seems to be the case with Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart” followup, “Don’t Worry Darling.”

According to THR, while the production is now welcoming Gemma Chan and Kiki Layne to the ranks of the cast, “Don’t Worry Darling” is losing another member, Dakota Johnson. This announcement comes on the heels of Shia LaBeouf being replaced by Harry Styles due to those aforementioned scheduling issues. However, it appears that Florence Pugh and Chris Pine are still attached and aren’t going anywhere.
Details about the project are being kept under wraps, but we know Wilde’s new film is a big departure from “Booksmart” and is instead a psychological thriller about a housewife (Pugh) that discovers the dirty secret behind her isolated, utopian community in the 1950s California desert. It’s unclear who Chan and Layne are playing in the film, but the report claims Layne is filling the role left by Johnson.

Chan is probably best known for her roles in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Captain Marvel.” She’s next supposed to appear in another Marvel Studios production, as one of the leads of “Eternals.” Layne is probably best known for her role in Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” and recently appeared in the Netflix action film, “The Old Guard.”
No release date has been set for “Don’t Worry Darling,” but production is said to begin later this month.
