‘Giants Being Lonely’ Exclusive Discussion: Guillermo Del Toro Joins The Filmmakers To Talk About This “Beautiful” Film

One of the biggest difficulties with being a fan of indie cinema is knowing which features are worth your time and which, frankly, aren’t. Thankfully, when it comes to the new drama, “Giants Being Lonely,” you don’t even need to watch the trailer to know this is a quality feature. Instead, you have the stamp of approval from none other than Guillermo del Toro.

Recently, “Giants Being Lonely” had its New York premiere hosted by Metrograph Live Screenings. Following the screening, Guillermo del Toro hosted a discussion with the film’s writer-director Grear Patterson and producer by Olmo Schnabel. And thanks to the folks at Metrograph and the people behind the film, we are thrilled to offer our readers an exclusive look at the full discussion that was included in the premiere.

In the discussion, del Toro explains why he adores the new film and said, “What is beautiful about the movie – and the reason I think is the purity of the voice – is the reason somebody may reject it, it’s the exact same reason why somebody may love it to death.”

Patterson added, “I wanted to pay homage to all the movies that made me want to write and be interested and be so emotionally engaged. The films that I watched that made me feel like I wasn’t alone.”

“Giants Being Lonely” stars sibling actors Jack Irving and Ben Irving, alongside artist Lily Gavin (who recently made a short film for Dazed x Gucci which is out now).

In our review of the film, we called it “a profoundly beautiful film. Not only in its compositional choices but also in its otherworldly sound design, which oscillates between formal and experimental, mixing classical score and ambient noise in equal measure.”

“Giants Being Lonely” debuted at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and has been seen at various festivals before its recent premiere at New York City’s Metrograph. The film is now available on disc and digital, via Gravitas Ventures. You can watch the full discussion below.

Here’s the synopsis for “Giants Being Lonely”:

Bobby (Jack Irving) is the star pitcher on his high-school baseball team, a motherless dreamer whose alcoholic father loves him but remains distant and aloof. His teammate Adam (Ben Irving) is the coach’s son, prone to violent reproaches at home with little support from his emotionally distant mother. Caught in between them is Caroline (Lily Gavin), a high school beauty from a seemingly perfect home who loves both golden boys, and just wants to go to prom. Set in a semi-rural landscape of verdant forests and pent-up yearning, the debut feature from lauded mixed-media artist Grear Patterson is a deeply personal story of youth and young manhood, tracing the ups and downs of love, sex, loneliness, friendship, baseball, and death – as the pressure mounts to make it out alive.
