All the talk about Fox’s Marvel licensing that transfers over to Disney now that the Mouse House owns the studio was centered around the main “X-Men” films and the “Fantastic Four” franchise. However, you can’t forget about the recent series “The Gifted,” which appears on Fox and features some of the lesser-known X-Men characters that haven’t really been featured in the film series. Well, we hate to break the news to you, but Fox has gone ahead and canceled the series after only two seasons, despite decent ratings.
Deadline is reporting that Fox’s decision-making regarding certain series has changed since the ownership has changed hands. And now that Fox doesn’t have ownership of “The Gifted,” and it’s squarely in the realm of Marvel TV, the network is primarily concerned with traditional ratings, and that means the “X-Men” spin-off is now dead. Normally, Fox would take other factors into consideration, such as online viewing (which saves many of these lower-rated series from cancellation). But as of now, “The Gifted” is no more.

That being said, Deadline does say that there is an outside chance that Disney could save the series, if it so chooses, by allowing it to live in the streaming realm, either with Hulu or Disney+. The report says that no formal discussions have happened, but since Disney rules all, that is now a possibility. However, just based on speculation about the future of the “X-Men” franchise, which seems destined for a massive reboot, it’s fair to say that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios (and thus, Disney) would really like to start fresh everywhere. So, we’d guess that this series is destined to stay dead.
For those not familiar with the short-lived series, “The Gifted” followed a suburban family that has to go on the run when it’s revealed that their teenage children are mutants with special powers. This puts the family in the middle of a war between different factions of mutants, as well as government organizations.
Despite its low ratings, “The Gifted” is championed by many fans of the “X-Men” franchise as perhaps the best version of the superheroes in film and TV.
