'Godzilla Minus One' Teaser: Japan's Latest Kaiju Film Debuts In Theaters Later This Year

While the “Godzilla” franchise seems to be going pretty well in America, with Adam Wingard’s upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel set to arrive in 2024, over in Japan, the original Toho-guided franchise has been quiet since 2016’s “Shin Godzilla.” And before that, there wasn’t a new live-action Japanese-produced film in the franchise since 2004. But even though it’s been several years, it looks like Japan has a new “Godzilla” film coming later this year, and it appears the franchise is going back to the beginning.

In the teaser for “Godzilla Minus One,” we’re going back to post-war Japan to see how the people of the 1950s react to the emergence of the skyscraper-sized monster. The teaser doesn’t show off too much of the film’s plot or the title monster (it is a teaser after all), but it does show that fans of the original live-action films of decades past will be happy to see what the franchise is doing now. Whereas the American version of the franchise seems to be focused on showing a ton of huge, CGI monsters all battling each other in city-destroying combat, “Godzilla Minus One” looks to be a throwback to the more human stories of what happens when a massive monster invades your location.

Again, exact plot details are being kept under wraps. We do know that “Godzilla Minus One” is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who is also handling the writing and VFX. The filmmaker, most recently, has worked on a number of animated films.

“Godzilla Minus One” is slated to debut in Japan on November 3 before hitting the US on December 1. You can watch the new teaser below.
