'Godzilla X Kong' Filmmaker Adam Wingard Not Returning For Next MonsterVerse Film

There are roughly two types of Adam Wingard fans. There are the folks that know him from the MonsterVerse franchise, where he’s made films such as “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” Then there are people who know him from his earlier films like his breakout “You’re Next” and the incredible “The Guest.” The former is going to be a bit bummed by the latest Wingard news while the latter are going to be psyched.

According to THR, Adam Wingard is not going to return to the MonsterVerse franchise for another ‘Godzilla x Kong’ film. According to the report, the studio wants to move ahead pretty quickly on a new film and that doesn’t work with the filmmaker’s schedule. We already found out, earlier this month, that Wingard was going to work on a new film, “Onslaught,” next.

That means the MonsterVerse is on the hunt for a new filmmaker to lead the franchise. Unfortunately, for whoever takes over, Wingard is leaving some mighty big shoes to fill. His first film in the franchise, the aforementioned “Godzilla vs. Kong,” was released during the pandemic, day and date with Max, and still made $470 million worldwide, becoming one of the biggest hits during the worst of COVID. Just released in March, “Godzilla x Kong” is set to become the highest grossing film in the entire franchise, currently sitting at $563 million worldwide. So, the next filmmaker has to contend with previous films becoming the most popular of the franchise.

As mentioned, Wingard is anything but bored. He’s already lined up “Onslaught” as his next feature. Plot details are unknown at this time, but the film is set to reunite the filmmaker with his frequent collaborator, Simon Barrett. The film is expected to begin filming this fall.
