How much praise is too much praise? Is it possible for a film to be too critically-acclaimed? We are reaching answers to those questions with Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming film “Roma.” Not only did the film win the coveted Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival, but it also received a mountain of reviews that seemed to throw around the word “masterpiece” an awful lot. And now, if that wasn’t enough, it appears that Cuaron got one major endorsement, albeit with a little bias.
At a screening of the film at the New York Film Festival, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, famous friend of Cuaron, introduced his pal’s latest film and had some kind words to say. “’Roma’ is the culmination of [Alfonso Cuaron’s] career so far. I told him, ‘This not only your best movie, it’s one of my top 5 movies of all-time. Don’t get big-headed. It’s number five,’” said del Toro.
Top five films of all time? Praise doesn’t get much higher than that, ladies and gentleman. Especially for such a cinephile as del Toro.
Cuaron heard about the introduction and thanked his buddy, saying, “Thank you for introducing ‘Roma,’ Memo! By all accounts, and not surprisingly, your introduction was way better than mine!”

Two things jump out about this incredible endorsement. First, “Roma” is sure to be great. There’s no way the film is anything less than stunning and incredibly well-crafted. But is there such a thing as too much hype? Can a film get too much acclaim? We shall see.
And secondly, what are del Toro’s top four films? Inquiring minds want to know!
“Roma” is set to be released December 14 by Netflix.
