HBO Max Boss Hints “Wildly Expensive” Snyder Cut Will Cost A Lot More Than $30 Million

HBO Max is officially the future home of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” aka The Snyder Cut. The film (TV miniseries?) is expected to arrive in 2021 and has been described by the filmmaker as a massive redo of the superhero film that flopped at the box office and failed to excite fans back in 2017. But even with Snyder talking about how much money is likely required to bring his vision to fruition, a WarnerMedia executive recently went into more detail and it appears that the new “Justice League” cut is way more expensive than we originally thought.

Speaking on the Recode Podcast from Vox, Chairman of WarnerMedia and head of HBO Max, Bob Greenblatt, talked about the Snyder Cut and what it took to bring the new film to the streaming service. And though we already knew that it was going to require a reported budget between $20 million and $30 million to get it all taken care of, Greenblatt teased that it’s likely much more than the high-end of that estimate.

“Because it isn’t as easy as going into the vault and there’s a Snyder Cut sitting there to put out,” explained Greenblatt. “It does not exist. Zack is actually building it and it’s complex including…new VFX shots, it’s a radical rethinking of that movie and it’s complicated and wildly expensive.”

He added, “I’ll just say I wish it was just 30 million and stop there. It’s an enormous undertaking and very complex.”

Already, when it was announced that the recut would take approximately $30 million, people were shocked by the figure. Why on Earth would WarnerMedia sink tens of millions of dollars into a new version of a film that people generally dislike? Well, we probably won’t hear what the final total for the “radical rethinking” of “Justice League” will cost, but fans that were taking the Snyder Cut for granted should definitely be thankful to know that the studio is willing to put in enough cash to fund multiple films just to allow you to see Superman in a black suit and Darkseid. Wow.
