Last year saw horror fans embrace “Halloween” unlike ever before, as the reboot-quel scored massive box office and garnered some impressive reviews. This year, the remake train keeps on going with the impending “Child’s Play” re-imagining coming June 21. And not to be outdone, Jordan Peele is in the middle of production on a “Candyman” remake. So, horror remakes are back in vogue, which means it was only a matter of time before Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser” series got revived.
Variety is reporting that Spyglass Media Group has enlisted writer David S. Goyer to produce and pen the script for an upcoming “Hellraiser” remake. The series launched in the late-80s and has continued for decades, with 10 total films and multiple spin-offs in other mediums like comic books and novels. “Hellraiser” follows the evil entities known as the Cenobites, led by the iconic Pinhead, as they torture and maim humans in a sadomasochistic way. The Cenobites invade Earth thanks to a mysterious puzzle box.

Spyglass’ Gary Barber said, “Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative ‘Hellraiser’ haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of ‘Hellraiser.’”
“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original ‘Books of Blood’ paperbacks and ‘The Hellbound Heart’ novella,” said Goyer. “Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”
Goyer is probably best known as the co-writer of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy. However, he’s also been involved in a number of high-profile genre films including “Man of Steel,” “Batman v. Superman,” and “Blade: Trinity,” which he also directed. His most recent film credit is on the upcoming “Terminator: Dark Fate.”
No word on when the new “Hellraiser” will be released, but Spyglass is said to be fast-tracking the production.
