Way back in February 2023, we first learned that acclaimed filmmaker Trey Edward Shults would be writing and directing a new film that would star The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye. Since then, however, we haven’t heard much about it. Well, now we officially know the title, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” and the studio that will distribute it.

According to Lionsgate, the studio has picked up the rights to Trey Edward Shults new film, “Hurry Up Tomorrow.” The film is described as an extension of the highly anticipated album of the same title by The Weeknd. The film stars The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan.
Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium. With ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”

It’s still unclear what “Hurry Up Tomorrow” will be about. And honestly, after the release of “The Idol,” the much-maligned HBO series that was the brainchild of The Weeknd, there isn’t a lot of optimism about this film. I mean, sure, it has Shults as a writer-director, and he has made really solid films like “Waves” and “It Comes at Night,” but let’s be real, The Weeknd is not a great actor. Also, considering this is made as an extension of his own record, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” reeks of vanity project.
All that aside, the film is written and directed by Shults and has two really solid actors, Ortega and Keoghan. So, perhaps this is actually going to show that The Weeknd is a true film star. We’ll have to wait and see.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet for “Hurry Up Tomorrow.”
