Got a Tip?

‘Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus’ Added To TIFF ’09 Line-Up

The 2009 Toronto International Film Festival has added twenty eight more films to its ever-expanding and pretty solid line-up this year, though admittedly, perhaps they’re getting to the lesser films and maybe the best pictures have already been announced? It’s hard to say, TIFF is still a few weeks off so there’s plenty of time to announce more films (we’ll likely be eating these words soon, we’ve heard, “The White Ribbon” will be announced eventually).

The stand-outs of today’s line-up are thus:
– Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” that stars Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits as the Devil and of course the last onscreen performance of the dearly departed Heath Ledger. The film played to mixed reviews in Cannes, but perhaps this is its last ditch attempt to sell in the U.S. and come out this fall (meaning someone could eventually pick it up, but if it doesn’t happen at TIFF, we’re likely not going to see the picture until 2010).
– Atom Egoyan’s “Chloe,” the film that stars Amanda Seyfried, Julianne Moore and perhaps is more known for the movie that had to almost halt production, because lead actor Liam Neeson had to tend to his wife Natasha Richardson who died in a freak skiing accident earlier this year (RIP).
– Jean-Marc Vallee’s “The Young Victoria,” that stars Emily Blunt which will close out the 2009 film fest.

That’s about it for the big, big names, but our old pal, erstwhile MuchMusic VJ, Sook-Yin Lee does have a new romantic comedy called, “Year of the Carnivore” (some may remember her as one of the females that has sex on camera in John Cameron Mitchell’s “Shortbus”), and as we hinted above, there’s probably still big names to be announced.
