It’s no secret that theaters are struggling, and 2024 was shaping up to be another disappointing year. You know it’s a rough year when we’re already at the end of June, and “Dune: Part Two” is the highest grossing film worldwide ($711 million). Or should we say “was” the highest grossing film, thanks to the monster success of Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

That’s right, in only its second week of release, “Inside Out 2” has passed “Dune: Part Two” to become the biggest film, not only domestically, but worldwide as well. The film has earned an estimated $724 million, which includes a record-setting second weekend domestically of $100 million. It’s the best second weekend since “Barbie’s” $93 million last year. This film is set to easily blow by $1 billion and could become a contender for biggest animated movie ever.

As mentioned, the $100 million domestic take for a second weekend is a record, beating “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which earned $92.3 million last year in its second frame. That film would go on to earn a worldwide total of $1.36 billion. Obviously, if “Inside Out 2” earns a total around that range, it would be nothing short of a massive success for Disney and Pixar.
One thing to take notice is what type of lesson is learned by this sort of performance. For Disney and Pixar (as well as rival studios), they’ll have to figure out how to replicate this type of success in the future, as it’s becoming harder and harder to release a billion-dollar film. We already know that Pixar has said that they’re going to focus quite a bit on franchise films, including sequels and possible reboots of previous movies. And guess what? If “Inside Out 2” proves anything, it’s that people will show up for a Pixar sequel.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. This week sees the release of “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which is definitely not a comparable film to the family-friendly animated “Inside Out 2.” Though, ‘Day One’ will suck up some of the screens. It won’t be until July 3, when we see the release of “Despicable Me 4” that we’ll see any real competition for the Pixar film.
In the meantime, over the next couple of weeks, we should see “Inside Out 2” continue to dominate.
