International Film Music Critics Association Awards For Excellence Needs A New Name; ‘Wall-E’ Most Lauded

The IFMCA released their list of candidates for Awards of Excellence (is this anything like Outstanding Achievement In The Field Of Excellence?) and there aren’t many surprises. The folks at the committee felt the need to spread the wealth, leading to four nominations going towards critical darling “Wall-E.” The Pixar hit was nominated for Film Score of The Year, Best Score For An Animated Film, Best Film Composition (“Define Dancing”) and composer of the year for Thomas Newman, who also scored “Towelhead” and “Revolutionary Road”.

Unlike other committees, the IFMCA recognizes different genres, which allows for a wider range of nominations, which is probably what led to the increased recognition for composer Danny Elfman. Elfman picked up seven individual nominations for his prestige work in “Milk,” his documentary scoring with “Standard Operating Procedure” and for his bread and butter, the fantasy/sci-fi realm (“Wanted,” “Hellboy 2”). The varied genres also allowed recognition for Johan Soderqvist’s brilliant work on “Let The Right One In” and Michael Giacchino’s jazzy “Speed Racer” score. Because they work international, it was also interesting to see work that has not yet been released in America, like the fantasy “Inkheart” and the Miyazaki feature “Ponyo On A Cliff.”
