James Cameron Confirms Previously Reported 'Avatar' Sequel Titles But Isn't Sure They'll Stick

Back in November, there was a report that revealed the four titles for the upcoming ‘Avatar’ sequels. At the time, the titles featured words that don’t make sense to us, as they’re clearly alien names and were vague enough that no plot spoilers could be unearthed. Either way, we treated them as rumor and nothing more. Well, according to James Cameron himself, those titles are definitely more than just rumor.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, while on the red carpet promoting “Alita: Battle Angel,” the filmmaker was asked if there is any validity to the rumored titles. And even though he tried to remain vague, he did, in fact, confirm that those titles are legit. Kind of.

“I can neither confirm nor deny,” Cameron said. “All right, here’s what I’ll tell ya. Those titles are among titles that are in consideration. And no final decisions have been made yet.”

Now, for those that don’t remember the titles, here’s what was reported in November:

Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Seed Bearer
Avatar: The Tulkun Rider
Avatar: The Quest for Eywa

Obviously, with the first of those films, ‘The Way of Water,’ not scheduled to be released until December 2020, there’s still plenty of time for Cameron to scrap all these titles and come up with four completely new ones. However, it must be said that while these titles don’t tell us anything about the films and are completely vague and strange, we’re happy the filmmaker isn’t going with ‘Avatar 2,’ ‘Avatar 3,’ etc. We’ll give him credit for actual titles.

“Avatar 2,” aka “Avatar: The Way of Water,” aka whatever title Cameron finalizes will be released in theaters on December 18, 2020. Plan accordingly.
