James Wan’s “Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom” is going to be the final film from the DCEU (DC Extended Cinematic Universe) and is expected to be the last outing for actor Jason Momoa as the titular superhero (reports suggest he may play the character Lobo somewhere in James Gunn’s DC Studios or directly in “Superman: Legacy”). As things wind down, there have been multiple reports and online rumors that pointed toward another haphazard DC production, leading to multiple cuts and extensive reshoots. Wan is now speaking on those rumblings and how accurate they actually are.
From a snippet of a more extensive interview that Empire Magazine had with the filmmaker in their recent issue, Wan attempted to comment on the reality of the situation. While there have been multiple trade reports about the ‘Lost Kingdom’ problems, Wan says he ended up making the movie he wanted to and that the online narrative wasn’t really indicative of the reality of the reshoots. Wan insisted the production only shot seven to eight days of reshoots on the sequel, which, in fairness to Wan, is sort of average even by Marvel Studios standards and blockbusters as a whole.
“I’ve had to learn to be more Zen in dealing with all the noise around me, for sure,” James Wan told Empire as part of their ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’ cover story. “I’m a pretty private person. I don’t get on social media and have fights, but it’s difficult because this narrative has emerged that is not the reality. The noise is fun to write about, and it gets clicks, but people don’t know the truth.”
“Look, I’m a collaborative filmmaker — I welcome people’s thoughts and opinions,” Wan said. “But ultimately, I feel I have more than proven myself. So, it was like: ‘This is the movie I want to make.’”
“We probably did seven or eight days,” he says of the number of reshoot days the production shot, “which is nothing for a movie of this size. It was just spread out because it’s so hard to get your actors back once you’ve finished the initial shoot.”
The first ‘Aquaman’ installment made over a billion dollars, but there is an expectation there could be a dip at the box office like the projections with Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels” next month. However, a sizable global audience embraced the original for all its over-the-topness, and the sequel will likely feature a similar visually-focused popcorn film, so who knows, maybe it can beat the so-far disastrous 2023 DC odds.
“Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom” will hit theaters on December 20, and you can watch the latest trailer below.
