Jemaine Clement Says ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Follow-Up ‘We’re Wolves’ Finally Being Written With Taika Waititi After Delays

There has been a longtime promise from “What We Do In The Shadows” creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi is that they would be tackling a spinoff film with tbeir longtime pal Rhys Darby leading a group of Kiwi werewolves with the pic, “We’re Wolves,” but there were no updates in sight after heaps of delays as the pair have been busy with various projects and Waititi getting involved with a slew of projects once Hollywood came calling after “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Jojo Rabbt” placed him in huge demand.

Speaking with Colldier at the Annecy Film Festival to promote his new film “Kiri & Lou Go Raaa!,”, Clement revealed they’ve finally mapped out when to get the creative ball rolling, although they haven’t entirely decided whether the movie will be scripted with a sprinkling of improv like the recent Hulu series (more of an expansion with a new set of vampires in Staten Island) of the same name that had veteran British comedian/musician Matt Berry anchoring the show. Or be closer to the original movie, where it was mostly improv comedy.

“We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently…When we get together, we do some work on it,” Clement said of the film’s current status.

“The movie is a 100% improvised dialogue to a storyline, and the TV show’s very much scripted with occasional improv, so they’re quite different to make. The challenge with the TV show was trying to have that feel where anything could happen because it’s improv, and we just did that by having a good cast, who were also amazing at improv. They’re actually some of the best in the world, I think…Now we have to decide, ‘Are we going to script this one or are we going to do improv like the first one, or scripted like the show?’ It’s quite good to have the control of the shot. It’s really fun just making it up on the fly.”

Those years of delays weren’t entirely shocking as Waititi had attached himself to projects like “”Next Goal Wins,” his MCU sequel “Thor: Love & Thunder,” “Akira,” “Flash Gordon,” a mysterious “Star Wars” film (that he seemingly never really got around to writing and worked on “The Mandalorian“), a movie adaptation of graphic novel “The Incal” (a vibrant sci-fi fantasy epic created by Alejandro Jodorowsky and the late influential French artist Moebius), the pirate series led by Darby called “Our Flag Means Death,” the “Time Bandits” series remake starring Lisa Kudrow (“The Comeback”), “Reservation Dogs,” “Last Look,” “Interior Chinatown,” “Very Young Frankenstein,” and his most recent effort, the sci-fi dark comedy “Klara & The Sun.” Also, during that slew of projects, the duo would see their mockumentary spun off with the show and another New Zealand-set genre show, “Wellington Paranormal.”

The Hulu show had a much larger budget than the original movie, allowing for “What We Do In The Shadows” to explore all sorts of kinds of monsters beyond vampires and werewolves, which could allow for “We’re Wolves” to keep that going by seeing that pack interact with other kinds of creatures from the world of horror and cryptids mythology (Lockness Monster, Bigfoot, Yeti..etc).
