‘Last Look’: Taika Waititi & ‘Barry’ Writer/Producer Jason Kim Team For New Hulu Comedy Series Set In Luxury Fashion World

Today, it was announced that Taika Waititi has closed a new first-look deal with 20th Television, FX Productions, and Hulu (extending his longstanding working relationship with the companies), which has led to the reveal of a new TV project called “Last Look” set in the world of a luxury fashion brand that sees him working alongside writer Jason Kim (the two will co-write and executive produce together), who is no stranger to the world of comedy TV.

That news, coming from outlets like Deadline, as the outlet describes that the TV project will be “a modern upstairs/downstairs comedy set in a luxury fashion house. It depicts the lives of the underdogs who work tirelessly to make the fashions come to life, and the fabulous monsters who design them.”

We should note that while Waititi may be mostly known for his feature efforts, the creative filmmaker has long been involved with a slew of TV series under his belt such as the upcoming FX pilot “Very Young Frankenstein,” “What We Do In The Shadows” (a spinoff of his vampire mockumentary, changing locations from Wellington, New Zealand to Staten Island, New York), the priate comedy “Our Flag Means Death,” a small screen iteration of the Terry Gilliam flick “Time Bandits,” “Wellington Paranormal,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Interior Chinatown,” “Flight of the Conchords, and directed an episode in the first season of “The Mandalorian.”

Kim’s exciting background in television includes Bill Hader‘s fantastic hitman satire “Barry,” Lena Dunham‘s NYC-set comedy series “Girls,” and the Judd Apatow-produced raunchy Netflix rom-com “Love,” led by Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs. He is also scripting the “Crazy Rich Asians” spinoff movie starring returning cast members Gemma Chan (“The Creator”) and Harry Shum Jr. (“Everyone Everywhere All At Once”), said to be taking some story beats from the Kevin Kwan novel “China Rich Girlfriend.”

It remains to be seen if real fashion labels, models, designers, and media faces of that world will be participating in “Last Look,” but it would be fun to see them adding some real-world elements like Ben Stiller did with his “Zoolander” send-up films that attempted to take the piss out of the world of modeling.

Waititi, who was once attached to helm projects like “Flash Gordon” (based on the serial sci-fi hero that inspired characters like Han Solo), a long gestating live-action version of “Akira” (now dead at WB) and a mysterious “Star Wars” film (Waititi preivously signaled he never completed a script and had been still mulling over ideas), but had instead focused on a feature adaptation of the sci-fi novel “Klara & the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro (“Never Let Me Go,” “The Buried Giant”) and is coming to theaters in 2026 (we’re waiting for Sony Pictures to announce a specific date and drop a teaser trailer) with an impressive cast that features Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Simon Baker, Natasha Lyonne, and Steve Buscemi.
