As awards talk heats up, there’s one movie that certain cinephiles feel bummed is not in the conversation —James Gray‘s "The Immigrant." Even though it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, the Weinstein Company took their time releasing the movie, eventually giving the reserved drama a limited bow this past spring. And the film’s star Jeremy Renner doesn’t quite understand why the movie was given short shrift.
"It’s a bummer, you know?" he told Indiewire. "How and why people pay for a movie and how and why they release it the way they release it, you know… Harvey [Weinstein] has his own thoughts on it, and ultimately it’s above my pay grade to even pontificate on it, and…it’s frustrating, putting a lot of hard work into it, and I think Marion [Cotillard] and Joaquin [Phoenix] are terrific in it and should be recognized. But, you know man, that’s just how it goes."
But for Renner finds it "very fortunate" to be able to have the option to do smaller scale dramas when blockbuster movies keep his bread buttered. And one franchise he’s stepped into is the ‘Bourne’ series. Renner believes that returning duo of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass already know how to get Jason Bourne back in the mix.
"…it’s still moving. Yeah, it’s still moving," Renner told Crave Online about "Bourne 5," which would presumably follow "The Bourne Legacy." "We have our director [Justin Lin] who’s actually run off to do the ‘True Detective‘ series right now, and then while that’s happening, they’re finishing writing the script. I know Greengrass and Damon… well, I’ve heard [they] have maybe cracked an idea, a reason to continue the Bourne series, which is fantastic. They have created a very exciting universe, and hopefully in my mind I’d love for us to do something together. If not on the next one, sometime very soon. I think that would be really great. I know I want it. I feel like the fans want it as well."
"I think you pit them against each other, and then they go together against the bad guy," Renner speculated about how Aaron Cross and Jason Bourne could cross paths. "We realize that we’re not the enemy. I think a thousand people can come up with that scenario, but I think you do both. I think that could be really interesting. Mind you, there have been NO talks, whatsoever, creatively about that. So that’s just the fanboy in me, I suppose. [Laughs.]"
